EVERYDAY WITH JESUS
FOCUS OF THE WEEK
Read Matthew 4:1-11
Partnership with the Holy Spirit
FOCAL VERSE:
Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
DEEP REFLECTION:
This passage in Matthew 4:1-11 outlines how Jesus was tested through the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life. These are the three variables through which we are most likely to tested as believers. Each and every day there is a battle between the flesh and the spirit in man.
The focal verse indicates our greatest need in life—every word that comes from the mouth of God. As “bread” or physical food is to the body the word of God is to the spirit.
Nothing can replace the word of God in our lives. Study proves that there are people who eat lots of food to fill an emotional void they feel within. In the same regard, no human (no matter how great they are) can fully satisfy this greatest soul need; even though we are relational beings and no man is an island.
The bad habits and addictions we have to drugs, sweets, sex, fame, shopping, games, work, excessive sleep, etc are all created to satisfy present need or solve an issue within us.
We can also get comfortable with unacceptable behaviors such as lies, arrogance, unhealthy criticisms, pretense, people pleasing, and so on somewhat because it feeds your ego.
Likewise, falling into the trap of trying to impress our friends, families and the society can be inevitable if we are ruled by these three wordly variables.
The Bible makes us understand that when we receive Jesus, we are no longer of this world though we are still in this world. We are set apart to represent Jesus to the world in words and in deeds. Therefore, we no longer live according to the system of the world through the dictates of the flesh.
God sent his son Jesus to first die for our sins to redeem us from sin and also to module out the lives we ought to live.
We fall to sin because our flesh is naturally empowered by the systems of this world. The only way we can overcome sin is by strengthening our inner man to wax stronger than our flesh. That is why we need to be more intentional about our spiritual growth. The more we feed our spirits, the more our souls are quickened to enable our flesh to function in alignment to our divine make up.
Also, the word of God clearly directs us to do this life right. On our own we will fail. The word of God is the mind and voice of God as well. When we study God’s word on a daily basis, we receive enlightenment to make right decisions and choices in life.
Everyday with Jesus simply means everyday life based on the mind, will, voice and intentions of God almighty. It is an interest to know how Jesus moduled out life on earth and the desire to do life through the way He has paved for us. The how to do life on our terms creates anxiety, depression, insecurities, uncertainty, brokenness, failures, disappointments, unmet expectations, sicknesses, dangers, attacks, etc.
On the other hand, life with Jesus cures our anxieties, heals the soul, break strongholds in the mind and edifies us on a daily basis. He has won the victory for us. He brought an end to suffering, shame and sin. It is our decision to access this wonderful package by accepting the invitation to do life with him everyday.
In summary, life with Jesus is an invitation to win life from the inside out. There are many ways to do this life but the best way is through Jesus Christ because He is the only way, truth and life. In him we have life and have it more abundantly.
